  • About -Halifax

I am Canadian and whenever I travel and tell someone where I am from, I always hear the comment that ‘Canadians are just so nice’. I live in Toronto which is a very big cosmopolitan city, so people are just caught up in their lives and don’t really take the time to be so ‘nice’. Don’t get me wrong, at the core Canadians are wonderful people who respect others, say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and don’t think the world revolves around them (unlike our neighbours to the south), but the word ‘nice’ never really resonated with me. That is, until I went to Halifax.

The goodness that oozed out of everyone was palpable. From the cab drivers to our servers in restaurants, everyone was so open and willing to help in any way. I was going to jaywalk (cross the street from the middle of the road, not at a stop light) and was going to wait for the cars to pass. As soon as the first car saw me standing on the side of the road, they came to a halt. I then started to cross but saw a bus was coming in the next lane. It too came to a halt so I could cross. In any other country I would have been run over!!!

Halifax has a very small town feel (quite a sleepy little town), but there are enough attractions to fill your weekend. The ‘east-coast’ vibe is terrific – very laid back, no one is in a rush and the setting is stunning.

Here’s some trivia: what do you call people from Halifax? I would have thought Halifaxans but no, they are referred to as Haligonians.
