    I have dreamt my whole life of going to Papua New Guinea (PNG). I have see pictures in National Geographic of men with penis gourds and sticks through their noses with faces painted with magnificent patterns and colours.

    Unfortunately, there isn’t any interesting food or shopping in PNG.

     

  • Itinerary

    We flew to Port Moresby via Los Angeles and Manila (the travel time was 33 hours!)

    We then flew to Kokopo

    Flew to Wewak and stayed at In Weak. Took a 4 day journey down the Sepik River with a company called:

    Flew to Mt Hagen and stayed at Magic Mountain Lodge.

    Itinerary:

     

    July 7 – fly to POM

    July 9 – arrive in POM; day at Stanley Hotel; can visit Port Moresby Nature Park

    July 10 – fly to Rabaul; stay at Rapopo Plantation in Kokopo; go to Kopopo market; Diabetic Centre in Rabaul for artifacts

    July 11 – snorkelling tour (either Duke of York (Mioko) islands or Submarine Base at Tavui Pt. (go with Kabaira Dive and Tours or Hotel); Pigeon pt. Simpson Harbour = WW11 boats

    July 12 – Rabaul Mask Fest Kinavai (welcome Taubans who paddle from villages with ceremony and chants), see Asaro mudmen; $40

    July13 – Bainings fire dance

    July 14 – fly to Wewak via POM and stay at In Wewak (PNG Frontier Adventures picks us up -which they didn’t – they SUCKED; they were so negligent they gave us a discount at the end)

    July 15 – drive to Pagwi (Middle Sepik); canoe to Kanganaman (on way stop at Korogo)

    July 16 – visit Palembei and Yentchen; go to Marangai (need high water); back to Kanganaman (night = men in spirit house or croc hunt); sing sing?

    July 17 – visit Kamindibit, Aibom (near Chambri Lakes); try to visit Krimbit, Wamborn and Indengai; sleep in Kanganaman; sing sing (K400)

    July 18 – back to Pagwi to In Wewak

    July 19 – fly to Mt. Hagen and stay at Magic Mountain in Paiya village (40 min drive; go on nature walk)

    July 20 -Waghi for skeleton dance, coffee/tea plantation, Huli wigmen – 3 person dance

    July 21 – visit Paiya village; see chief and wife; see traditional cooking (mumu); women sing sing; Kumul lodge for birding (NO)

    July 22 – Mt. Hagen market; fly to POM; check into Stanley Hotel

    July 23 – POM to YYZ
